Presente simple: preguntas de información y uso básico

El presente simple se utiliza para describir hábitos, situaciones inmutables, verdades generales y arreglos fijos. Esa acción puede ser un pasatiempo, una rutina diaria o una acción que ocurre regularmente. Este tema es muy común en los niveles A1 y A2 de aprendizaje del inglés.

Simple present tense

The simple present tense is used to describe habits, unchanging situations, general truths, and fixed arrangements. That action can be a hobby, a daily routine, or an action that happens regularly.

Affirmative sentences

  1. I drink coffee every morning.
  2. She reads books in her free time.
  3. They play soccer on weekends.
  4. He drives to work every day.
  5. We listen to music while studying.
  6. The sun rises in the east.
  7. Birds fly in the sky.
  8. Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius.

The verbs usually don't change in the affirmative form, except for the third person singular (he, she, it).

  1. I have a cat.
  2. She has a dog.
  3. He goes to the gym regularly.

Negative sentences

You have to use "do not" (don't) or "does not" (doesn't) to make negative sentences in the simple present tense.

  1. I don't like spicy food.
  2. She doesn't watch TV often.
  3. They don't play basketball.
  4. He doesn't eat meat.
  5. We don't go to the beach in winter.
  6. The store doesn't open on Sundays.

Interrogative sentences

To form questions in the simple present tense, you need to use "do" or "does" at the beginning of the sentence.

En inglés no contamos con el signo de interrogación al inicio de la pregunta (solo al final). En su lugar, usamos el auxiliar "do" o "does".

  1. Do you like chocolate?
  2. Does she play the piano?
  3. Do they live in New York?
  4. Does he work on weekends?
  5. Do we need to bring anything to the party?
  6. Does it rain a lot in this city?

Information questions in simple present

Information questions (also known as WH-questions) are questions that begin with question words such as who, what, where, when, why, and how. In the simple present tense, these questions are formed by placing the question word at the beginning of the sentence, followed by "do" or "does".

  2. Where does she live?
  3. When do they go to school?
  4. Why does he study English?
  5. How do we get to the museum?

Mini story

This is my office. I have a desk, a chair, and a computer. I work here every day. I usually start my work at 9 AM and finish at 5 PM. I drink coffee while I work. Sometimes, I listen to music to help me concentrate. My office is quiet, so I can focus on my tasks. At lunchtime, I go out to eat with my colleagues. After work, I go home and relax. In the evening, I read a book or watch TV. I like my daily routine because it helps me stay organized and productive.

She is my secretary. She helps me with my work. She answers the phone and schedules appointments. She is very efficient and friendly. We work well together as a team. In her office, she has a filing cabinet and a printer. She prints documents and organizes files. I appreciate her support because she makes my job easier. We often have meetings to discuss our projects. Overall, I am grateful to have such a dedicated secretary.
