Vamos a estudiar cómo presentarnos en inglés. Aprenderás a decir tu nombre completo, cómo deletrearlo y a preguntar el nombre de otra persona. También aprenderás a decir tu edad y a preguntar la edad de alguien más. El siguiente vocabulario es esencial y te ayudará a comunicarte en situaciones básicas.

Recuerda que el principal objetivo en estos niveles es entender lo que leemos, no tanto hablar o escribir.

What Qué Used to ask for information about something. What is your name?
Who Quién Used to ask about a person or people. Who is your best friend?
This Esto / Esta Refers to a specific person or thing that is close to the speaker. This is my book.
Some Algún / Alguna Used to refer to an unspecified amount or number of something. I have some friends coming over.
Use Usar To put something into action or service. I use my computer for work.
Spell Deletrear To write or name the letters of a word in the correct order. Can you spell your name for me?
Introduce Presentar To make someone known by name to another person. Let me introduce you to my friend.
Complete Completar To finish or fill in all the parts of something. Please complete the form with your information.
Full name Nombre completo A person's first name and last name together. My full name is Italo Morales Fantone.
Last name Apellido The family name that comes after a person's first name. Her last name is Morales.
Middle name Segundo nombre A name given to a person that is between their first and last names. My middle name is Franchesco.
How old are you? ¿Cuántos años tienes? A question used to ask someone about their age. How old are you? I am 25 years old.
Different Diferente Not the same as another or each other. My car is different from yours.
Full Completo Containing all parts or elements; not lacking anything. The glass is full of water.
Indefinite Indefinido Not clearly defined or determined. An indefinite article is used when referring to something not specific.
Nice Agradable / Simpático Pleasant or enjoyable; friendly and kind. She is a nice person.
Architect Arquitecto A person who designs buildings and oversees their construction. The architect designed a beautiful house.
Arm chair Sillón A comfortable chair with side supports for a person's arms. I like to read books in my armchair.
Carpet Alfombra A floor covering made of thick woven fabric. The carpet in the living room is very soft.
Ceiling Techo The upper interior surface of a room. The ceiling is painted white.
Coffee table Mesa de centro A low table typically placed in front of a sofa. We put the magazines on the coffee table.
Fire Fuego The process of combustion that produces heat and light. We sat by the fire to keep warm.
Fireplace Chimenea A structure for containing a fire, typically made of brick or stone. The fireplace adds warmth to the room.
Plant Planta A living organism that typically grows in soil and has leaves and stems. I have a plant on my desk.
Remote control Control remoto A device used to operate electronic equipment from a distance. I use the remote control to change the TV channels.
Rug Alfombra pequeña A small piece of thick fabric used to cover part of a floor. The rug in the hallway is very colorful.
Shelf Estante A flat horizontal surface used for storing or displaying items. I keep my books on the shelf.
Sofa Sofá A comfortable seat for multiple people, typically upholstered. We sat on the sofa to watch a movie.
Wall unit Mueble de pared A piece of furniture that is attached to or built into a wall for storage or display. The wall unit holds our TV and books.
Waste paper basket Papelera A container for discarding waste paper. I threw the old papers into the waste paper basket.
Chair Silla A piece of furniture for sitting, typically with a back and four legs. I sat on the chair at the dining table.
Dish Plato A flat, round object used for serving or eating food. I put my food on a clean dish.
Jar Tarro / Frasco A cylindrical container with a wide mouth, used for storing food or other items. I keep cookies in a glass jar.
Pitcher Jarra A container with a handle and spout used for pouring liquids. I poured water from the pitcher into my glass.
Knife Cuchillo A tool with a sharp blade used for cutting. Be careful when using a knife to chop vegetables.
Napkin Servilleta A piece of cloth or paper used at meals to wipe the mouth and hands. Please pass me a napkin.
Saucer Platillo A small, shallow dish used to hold a cup. I placed my teacup on the saucer.
Table Mesa A piece of furniture with a flat top and legs, used for eating or working. We sat at the table for dinner.
Table cloth Mantel A piece of fabric used to cover a table. The tablecloth is decorated with flowers.
Teaspoon Cucharita A small spoon used for stirring tea or coffee. I used a teaspoon to add sugar to my tea.
Word Palabra A single distinct meaningful element of speech or writing. The word "hello" is used as a greeting.
Vowel Vocal A speech sound produced without any significant constriction of airflow in the vocal tract. The letter "A" is a vowel.
Umbrella Paraguas A device used for protection against rain or sunlight, typically consisting of a circular canopy on a folding frame. I always carry an umbrella in case it rains.
Television Televisión A system for transmitting visual images and sound that are reproduced on screens, primarily used to broadcast programs for entertainment, information, and education. I watch my favorite shows on television every evening.
Toilet Inodoro / Baño A fixture used for the disposal of human waste, typically consisting of a bowl and a seat. The bathroom has a clean toilet.
Stereo Estéreo A system for reproducing sound using two or more channels to create a sense of spatial distribution. I listen to music on my stereo system.
Purse Bolso A small bag used by women to carry personal items. She carries her wallet and keys in her purse.
Pleasure Placer A feeling of happiness or satisfaction. It was a pleasure to meet you.
Pen Bolígrafo / Pluma A writing instrument that uses ink to write on paper. I wrote a letter using my favorite pen.
Object Objeto A material thing that can be seen and touched. The vase is a beautiful object on the table.
Notebook Cuaderno A book of blank or ruled pages for writing notes. I keep my class notes in a notebook.
Fan Ventilador A device that creates a current of air for cooling or ventilation. I turned on the fan to cool down the room.
Elephant Elefante A large mammal with a trunk, tusks, and large ears, native to Africa and Asia. The elephant is the largest land animal.
Egg Huevo A round or oval object laid by female birds, reptiles, and fish, containing a developing embryo. I had a boiled egg for breakfast.
Cradle Cuna A small bed for a baby, typically on rockers or springs. The baby sleeps in a cradle.
Consonant Consonante A speech sound that is not a vowel, typically produced by obstructing airflow in the vocal tract. The letter "B" is a consonant.
Alphabet Alfabeto A set of letters or symbols in a fixed order used to represent the basic sounds of a language. The English alphabet has 26 letters.
Who's this? ¿Quién es este/esta? A question used to ask about the identity of a person or thing. Who's this? Is he your brother?
What's this? ¿Qué es esto? A question used to ask about the identity of a thing. What's this? Is it a new gadget?
How do you spell your name? ¿Cómo se deletrea tu nombre? A question used to ask someone to spell their name. How do you spell your name? It's ...

Information questions

Known as "Wh- questions", these are questions that begin with words like "What," "Who," "Where," "When," "Why," and "How." They are used to gather specific information.

Also named "Open questions," because they require more than a simple "yes" or "no" answer. They have a variety of possible responses.

  1. What? - Used to ask for information about something.
  2. Who? - Used to ask about a person or people.
  3. Where? - Used to ask about a place or location.
  4. When? - Used to ask about a time or date.
  5. Why? - Used to ask for a reason or explanation.
  6. How? - Used to ask about the manner or way something is done.
  7. Which? - Used to ask about a choice or selection from a known set of options.
  8. Whose? - Used to ask about ownership or possession.

Example:

  • Question: Who is your best friend?
  • Answer: My best friend is Sarah.

Yes/No questions

Known as "Closed questions". They are used to confirm or deny information.

Example:

  • Question: Are you a student?
  • Answer: Yes, I am a student.

Who/What questions

Used to ask for specific information about people or things. What is used for things or animals, and Who is used for people.

Example:

  • Question: What is your name?

  • Answer: My name is Italo.

  • Question: Who is your teacher?

  • Answer: My teacher is Mr. Smith.

In the next section, you will find simple dialogues that incorporate the Wh- questions along with the verb "to be".
