The present continuous

The present continuous is used to describe actions that are happening at the moment of speaking or around the current time. It is formed using the verb "to be" (am, is, are) followed by the base verb with an "-ing" ending.

The action is happening now (the action is not finished yet).

  1. Affirmative:
    • I am eating.
    • You are playing.
    • He/She/It is running.
    • We are studying.
    • They are dancing.
  2. Negative:
    • I am not wearing.
    • You are not speaking.
    • He/She/It is not sleeping.
    • We are not cooking.
    • They are not swimming.
  3. Interrogative Yes/no:
    • Am I working?
    • Are you reading?
    • Is he/she/it playing?
    • Are we traveling?
    • Are they singing?
  4. Interrogative Wh- questions:
    • What am I doing?
    • Where are you going?
    • Why is he/she/it crying?
    • When are we leaving?
    • How are they feeling?

Basically, we add "-ing" to form the present continuous:

Some friends are having a great time at the beach. They are enjoying the sun, swimming in the sea, and playing games on the shore. One of them is building a sandcastle while another is reading a book under an umbrella. They are all wearing their bathing suits and sunglasses to protect themselves from the bright sun. The sound of the waves and the laughter of friends create a pleasant atmosphere. They are planning to stay until sunset to watch the beautiful colors in the sky as the sun goes down. It's a perfect day at the seaside!
